When I look back at my career as a website designer, one of the landmarks is creating the website for Hotel Opal in Kolhapur. The opportunity came early and it has stayed special; not only because the hotel is one of the first clients who entrusted me with their online presence, but also because it connects deeply with the rich tourism culture of Kolhapur, and the revered shrine of Mahalakshmi Temple, Kolhapur (known locally as Ambabai).
A Portrait of Hotel Opal
Established on 5 December 1968, Hotel Opal has been serving guests in Kolhapur for over five decades. Hotel Opal Kolhapur is located near famous Tararani chowk of Kolhapur.
The hotel offers spacious rooms both non-AC and AC, Deluxe and Deluxe Suite options, with modern amenities and complimentary breakfast. Hotel Opal Kolhapur What truly makes the place stand out is its in-house restaurant dedicated to authentic Kolhapuri cuisine; the famed “Tambda Rassa” (red gravy) and “Pandhra Rassa” (white gravy) are the hotel's signature dishes.
In recognition of its food and hospitality, Hotel Opal was awarded the “Times Now Foodie Award – Best Local Cuisine” in 2012.
Why It Was Meaningful for Me
For me, designing the website for Hotel Opal was more than a project; it was a statement. Having worked for years in design and printing, this venture into web & digital realm was a new horizon. Hotel Opal trusted me to reflect both their hospitality ethos and Kolhapur’s heritage in the online space.
Because Hotel Opal is directly linked to Kolhapur tourism; catering to visitors who come to seek blessings at the Mahalakshmi Ambabai temple, and those exploring the city’s cultural and culinary identity; I had to craft a site that balanced elegance, tradition, functionality, and conversion-readiness (for room bookings and dining enquiries).
Tying in Kolhapur Tourism & the Ambabai Connection
Kolhapur is renowned for many things; its heritage, cuisine, weaving industry, geography; but one of its crowning glories is the Mahalakshmi temple (also known as Ambabai Mandir). The hotel’s tourism page itself highlights the city’s religious places, heritage architecture, museums, forts, sanctuaries, and invites visitors for “Kolhapur Darshan & Local Sightseeing Tour Packages”.
By aligning Hotel Opal’s website to these aspects; highlighting proximity to religious pilgrimage (Ambabai), easy access to sightseeing, comfort in hospitality, and authentic Kolhapuri dining; it became a compelling narrative for travellers: come for the divine blessings of Ambabai, stay at Hotel Opal, savour the local cuisine, explore Kolhapur’s heritage.
A Visitor’s Experience
Imagine you arrive in Kolhapur; after perhaps offering your prayers at the Mahalakshmi Temple (Ambabai), feeling the spiritual pull of the city. You then seek comfortable accommodation, one that understands the local culture, offers a familiar yet refined stay. Hotel Opal welcomes you with ‘Hospitality with Simplicity’; the very tagline they live by.
You check into a Deluxe AC room, with modern amenities and complimentary breakfast. Later you head to the dining hall, praised as the largest in Kolhapur for authentic cuisine. You savour the Tambda Rassa and Pandhra Rassa, relish the flavours of the region, knowing you’re in the heart of Kolhapur’s culinary legacy.
Then you step out, perhaps on a short drive or stroll to key sights of Kolhapur; forts, sanctuaries, local markets; before returning to your base at Hotel Opal for restful comfort. A perfect balance of spirituality (with Ambabai), heritage (Kolhapur tourism) and hospitality (Hotel Opal).

Looking back, my collaboration with Hotel Opal is a story I hold dear. It brought together elements that I, Mandar Vaidya, deeply value: design, culture, heritage, tourism, digital presence. Through that website we aimed to show how a classic hotel in Kolhapur is more than just accommodation; it’s a gateway to the city, its cuisine, its traditions, and the divine presence of Ambabai Mahalakshmi.
If you ever visit Kolhapur; with an itinerary that includes the Mahalakshmi Ambabai Temple, exploring Kolhapur tourism destinations, sampling Kolhapuri cuisine; consider staying at Hotel Opal. And if you’re looking to design a website that reflects place, culture, identity; then perhaps you’ll remember your friend who once designed and still managing a website for Hotel Opal in Kolhapur.

Warm regards,

Mandar Vaidya
