Shri Mahalaxmi (Ambabai) temple
We will begin an enchanting tour of Kolhapur with the famous Mahalaxmi (Ambabai) temple and the blessings of the goddess. Not only in Maharashtra, but all over the country and the world; this temple is one among the three and a half SHaktipithas. This destination is similarly important as Kashi in northern India. That’s why Kolhapur is also known as the Dakshin Kashi (Kashi in the south).
The Mahalaxmi (Ambabai) temple is located exactly in the heart of the city; towards the west of the famous old palace. It is strongly believed that king Karndev from Chalukya lineage established this temple in 664 BC. The construction of this temple continued for the next two centuries. One gets fascinated to enter this massive Hemadpanthi style neatly crafted stone structures. A two storey structure consists of the Mahalaxmi (Ambabai) idol on the ground floor & the Matulinga on the first floor.
Around the main temple, there exist numerous small temples in which Navagrah Mandir & Sheshashayi Vishnu temple are important enough to describe an ancient formation of the temple. The Shikhara of the temple was built during 18th century by then Chhatrapati of karveer Sansthan. The Garud Mandap located in front of the main temple was constructed during the second half of 18th century.
The temple is crowded all around the year. Navratrotsav, Rathotsav (celebrated in the month of Chaitra) and Kiranotsav (an aggregation of nature and architecture) are among very famous festivals celebrated in the temple. In fact, this temple is a center of overall development of Kolhapur city.
श्री महालक्ष्मी (अंबाबाई) मंदिर
कोल्हापूरच्या पर्यटन जगताची सफर आपण सुरू करतोय श्री महालक्ष्मी अर्थात अंबाबाईच्या दर्शनाने व शुभाशीर्वादाने. केवळ महाराष्ट्राताच नव्हे तर देशभर, जगभर प्रसिद्ध असणार्‍या साडे तीन शक्तीपीठांपैकी एक प्रमुख ठिकाण म्हणजे श्री महालक्ष्मी मंदिर. उत्तरेत काशीला जे महत्त्व आहे, तेच महत्त्व श्री महालक्ष्मीच्या वास्तव्याने पावन झालेल्या कोल्हापूरला इकडे दक्षिणेत आहे. कोल्हापूर अर्थात करवीर क्षेत्र दक्षिण काशी म्हणूनही प्रसिद्ध आहे.
शहराच्या मध्यवस्तीत; जुना राजवाडा म्हणून प्रसिद्ध असणार्‍या प्रभागाच्या पश्‍चिमेला श्री महालक्ष्मी मंदिर वसलेले आहे. चालुक्यवंशिय राजा कर्णदेव याने इ. स. 664 मध्ये श्री महालक्ष्मीची स्थापना केली असे मानतात. त्यानंतरची दोन शतके विविध राजवटीत मंदिराचे बांधकाम सुरू राहिले. इ. स. 9व्या शतकात मंदिर बांधून पूर्ण झाले. हेमाडपंथी शैलीचे, भव्यदिव्य बांधणीचे, नक्षीकाम व कोरीवकामाने समृद्ध असणार्‍या या मंदिरात येताच मन मोहून जाते. मुलत: दुमजली असलेल्या या मंदिराच्या तळमजल्यावर श्री महालक्ष्मीची विलोभनीय मूर्ती आहे. वरच्या; दुसर्‍या मजल्यावर मातृलिंगाचे स्थान आहे.
मंदिराच्या आसपासच्या परिसरात अनेक छोटी मोठी मंदिरे असून त्यापैकी नवग्रह व शेशषायी विष्णू यांची देवळे शिल्प आणि प्राचीनत्त्व यांच्या दृष्टीने महत्त्वाची आहेत. मंदिराचे शिखर 18व्या शतकाच्या मध्यास तत्कालिन छत्रपतींनी बांधल्याची नोंद आहे. मुख्य मंदिरासमोर असणारा गरूड मंडप 18व्या शतकाच्या उत्तरार्धात बांधला गेला.
मंदिर वर्षभर भाविकांनी गजबजलेले असते. नवरात्रोत्सव, चैत्रात होणारा रथोत्सव व स्थापत्यशास्त्राचा अनोखा आविष्कार असणारा किरणोत्सव हे इथले प्रमुख उत्सव आहेत. कोल्हापूरची सर्वांगीण प्रगती ही श्री महालक्ष्मी मंदिराला केंद्रस्थानी धरूनच झाली आहे हे निर्विवाद सत्य.
